Rishop

Rishop is a serene village located in the Kalimpong sub-division, at an altitude of 5,500 feet. Initially a quiet hamlet with stunning views of the Kanchenjunga range, it began gaining attention as an eco-tourism destination in the early 1990s, thanks to the efforts of the forest department and voluntary organizations. By the late 1990s, Rishop became a popular tourist spot, though it has managed to retain its peaceful charm, avoiding mass commercialization. The village, also known as Kaffer, offers panoramic views of the snow-capped Kanchenjunga on clear days and is a haven for bird watchers, with a variety of species found in the area. The nearby Jhandi Dara hilltop provides spectacular sunrise views, adding to the village’s appeal.

Rishop’s main attraction is its tranquil environment, which allows visitors to walk through nearby forests without the crowds typical of more commercial destinations. The area is also home to a Heritage Forest designated by the forest department, which is another point of interest. A notable feature is the unique ‘Canopy Walk’ that takes visitors across ancient mossy Oak and Cypress trees, offering a close-up experience of the region’s biodiversity. Rishop experiences mild summers, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 25°C, and colder winters between 7 and 15°C. The village also witnesses heavy rainfall, so an umbrella is recommended for visitors throughout the year.
