Durpin Dara, also known as “binocular hill,” offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Kalimpong. The hill is one of two hills (the other being Deolo Hill) that frame the town, and it truly lives up to its name. From the summit, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of Kalimpong town, the snow-capped Himalayan ranges of Sikkim, the meandering Teesta River, and the distant Jelepla Pass. The landscape here is absolutely mesmerizing, especially when viewed through binoculars, as the name suggests.
At the top of Durpin Dara stands the Zang Dhok Palri Monastery, a stunning spiritual landmark that was consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1976. This monastery is an important place for Tibetan Buddhists and holds 108 volumes of the Kangyur (a collection of the Buddha’s teachings) as well as other sacred texts and scrolls that were moved out of Tibet after the Chinese invasion. The monastery, with its serene and peaceful surroundings, is a wonderful place for visitors to reflect and find mental peace.
In addition to the spiritual ambiance, Durpin Dara is also home to a golf course located near the summit, providing an enjoyable activity for golf enthusiasts while offering them incredible views as a backdrop.
For those looking for tranquility, natural beauty, and spiritual enrichment, Durpin Dara is an unmissable destination in Kalimpong.
