Buxa

Buxa, located in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal, is a village nestled within the Buxa Tiger Reserve, one of the largest and most biodiverse forests in the Dooars region. Situated 14 km from Alipurduar and about 180 km from Siliguri, Buxa is well-connected by both road and rail, making it accessible to nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. The area is named after the Buxa Fort, which stands at an altitude of 867 meters in the Sinchula Range and was historically significant as a stronghold guarding important routes into Bhutan. The fort is not only a historical landmark but also offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The rich biodiversity of Buxa is one of its key attractions, with the region being home to an impressive variety of flora and fauna, including rare orchids, medicinal plants, and numerous species of wildlife.

The Buxa Tiger Reserve houses over 400 species of trees, 250 species of shrubs, and 400 species of herbs, along with a remarkable collection of orchids, bamboo, and aquatic plants. It is home to several iconic species, including Asian elephants, tigers, wild boar, and sambar, with over 160 species of mammals and 284 species of birds identified. The reserve also boasts a rich variety of reptiles, including 76 species of snakes and the regal python. The reserve’s wet forests, unexplored terrains, and stunning natural beauty make it a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife photographers. Visitors can embark on a trek from Santhalbari, which takes about an hour and 15 minutes, to reach the Buxa Fort. Other attractions in the area include Rovers Point (also known as Romitey Dara), a birdwatching hotspot at 4,500 ft, and Jayanti, a picturesque area along the Jayanti River, which forms a natural border with Bhutan. This region is perfect for trekking, birdwatching, and experiencing the tranquility of the wilderness. Buxaduar to Jayanti is another popular trekking route that adds to the charm of Buxa.
