Tsomgo Lake, also known as Tsongmo Lake or Changu Lake, is a stunning glacial lake located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Gangtok, in the East Sikkim district of Sikkim, India. Situated at an elevation of 3,753 meters (12,313 feet), Tsomgo Lake is a mesmerizing destination that remains frozen during the winter months, creating a picturesque winter wonderland. The lake is deeply revered by the local Sikkimese people and holds great religious and cultural significance. Buddhist monks, who have studied the changing colors of the lake, once used these changes to predict weather patterns and other natural phenomena. The colors of the lake’s surface transform throughout the year, adding to its mystical appeal.
The beauty of Tsomgo Lake is especially noticeable during the warmer months, from mid-May onwards, when the lake’s periphery comes alive with vibrant blooms of rhododendrons (Sikkim’s state tree), primulas, blue and yellow poppies, and irises. It is also home to a variety of bird species, including the Brahminy ducks, and offers the chance to spot wildlife such as the red panda. Visitors to the lake can enjoy activities like joy rides on decorated yaks and mules, and indulge in local delicacies available at the kiosks. A small Shiva temple is located on the bank of the lake, adding to the spiritual atmosphere of the place. Because Tsomgo Lake lies within a restricted area, all Indian visitors must obtain permits, and foreign nationals require a special permit. The breathtaking journey to the lake is an adventure in itself, with the altitude rapidly increasing from 5,410 feet in Gangtok to 10,000 feet in just 15 kilometers, offering dramatic, scenic views of the surrounding landscapes.
