East Sikkim

East Sikkim is one of the most popular and well-connected regions of the state, home to Gangtok, the capital city and the hub of administrative activities. The region boasts a mix of breathtaking landscapes, adventure trails, and serene lakes, making it a favorite destination for travelers. One of the major attractions is Nathula Pass, a mountain pass that connects India with Tibet and serves as a historic Indo-China trade route. Nature lovers are drawn to Tukla Valley, a scenic retreat, while Tsomgo Lake and Aritar Lake offer a tranquil escape surrounded by lush greenery and picturesque paddy fields.

East Sikkim also holds historical and cultural significance, with Tashi View Point being a prime location to witness stunning sunrises and panoramic views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. For those seeking peace away from urban crowds, Bakthang Waterfall is a perfect picnic spot, offering refreshing cascades amid dense vegetation. The region is also known for its ancient monasteries, with Enchey Monastery standing out as a spiritual center, believed to be blessed by the tantric Lama Drupthob Karpo. The monastery, surrounded by lush forests, provides breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga and hosts the vibrant Cham dance festival, an important cultural event.

Another architectural marvel is the Rumtek Monastery, the largest monastery in Sikkim, renowned for its intricate Buddhist designs and religious significance. The Gonjang Monastery, a prime Buddhist learning center, is also famous for hosting the Saga Dawa festival, celebrating Buddha Purnima. Besides Buddhist sites, East Sikkim has important Hindu temples, such as Ganesh Tok, a small yet unique shrine offering mesmerizing views of valleys and hills, and Hanuman Tok, a temple managed by the Indian Army, dedicated to Lord Hanuman. These sacred sites make East Sikkim an important spiritual destination for both Buddhists and Hindus.

For wildlife and nature enthusiasts, East Sikkim offers the Himalayan Zoological Park and Fambong La Wildlife Sanctuary, both home to diverse flora and fauna. Additionally, man-made attractions like the Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden, Water Garden, and Saramsa Garden showcase rare orchids, tropical plants, and peaceful picnic spots. A trip to East Sikkim would be incomplete without experiencing the Gangtok Ropeway, which provides a breathtaking aerial view of the city’s valleys and lush landscapes, offering visitors an unforgettable perspective of the region’s natural beauty.
