The Jomolhari Trek is one of Bhutan’s most spectacular and challenging treks, offering breathtaking views, cultural richness, and unique experiences in the heart of the Himalayas. The trek spans from Shana to Thimphu, passing through stunning landscapes and traditional Bhutanese villages, with the towering Mount Jomolhari providing a dramatic backdrop.
Key Highlights:
Day 1: Arrive Paro by Druk Air & transfer to Thimphu (55km, approx. 1.1/2 hour drive)
Arrive Paro International airport, meet and greet by your dedicated guide and driver, drive to check into your hotel & proceed to visit Ta Dzong, then walk down the trail to visit Rinpung Dzong (“fortress of the heap of jewels”).
Overnight stay will be at hotel in Paro. (Altitude 2,280m)
Day 2: Day Excrusion to Chelela Pass (75km round trip, approx 4 hrs)
After breakfast, driving excursion to Chelela pass.
Chele la (pass), at an elevation 3,988 meters is considered to be one of the highest motorable passes in Bhutan. About 2 hrs of drive along a thickly-forested road, is a botanical paradise.
On your way stop to view the Dzongdrakha Goempa. Often called as mini Takstang, Dzongdrakha is a cliff-side temple complex on the western side of the Paro Valley.
On arrival back to paro after excrusion visit Drukgyel Dzong, along the way, visit the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang one of the 108 temples built in the Himalayas by Tibetan King, Songtsen Gampo. Evening time at leisure to cherish your last night stay in Bhutan…..

Day 03: Trek Starts – Sharna Zampa – Thangthangkha
Start Time: 6:30-7:00 AM
Details: Begin your trek from Sharna Zampa. Meet your trekking staff and get your permits checked at the Gunitsawa Army post. The trek includes a series of ups and downs through a river valley, eventually narrowing to a single path that leads to a meadow where the camp will be set up. If the weather is clear, you’ll enjoy your first great view of Mt. Jomolhari.
Day 04: Thangthangkha – Jangothang
Details: Trek along the Paro Chhu River through alpine meadows and sparse forests. Cross an army checkpoint and enjoy views of high mountain ridges and snow-capped peaks. You’ll also encounter yaks and their herders’ homes. The villages of Soe, Takethang, and Dangochang provide additional scenic value before reaching Jangothang, known for its stunning campsite and views of Mount Jomolhari.
Day 05: Jangothang Halt
Details: A rest day at Jangothang, perfect for acclimatization. Optional day hikes include trekking to Tshophu Lake, which offers views of Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and opportunities to spot blue sheep on the upper slopes.
Day 06: Jangothang – Lingshi
Details: Trek towards Lingshi with breathtaking views of Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tserim Gang. Cross the Nyelela Pass (4,700m) and pass through the picturesque Lingshi village. The trek covers 19 km and provides an opportunity to view the mystical Lingshi Dzong.
Day 07: Lingshi Stay
Details: Explore Lingshi village and visit Lingshi Dzong, the most remote Dzong in Bhutan. Enjoy the day at leisure.
Day 08: Lingshi – Shodu
Details: Climb to the Yelila Pass (4,930m) with stunning views of Jomolhari, Tserimgang, and Masanggang. The trek then descends steeply to Shodu.
Day 09: Shodu – Barshong
Details: Follow the Thimphu Chhu River through rhododendron forests and past beautiful waterfalls. The trail ascends to the ruins of Barshong Dzong.
Day 10: Barshong – Dolam Kencho
Details: Descend to the Thimphu River through dense forests of rhododendron, birch, conifer, maples, and bamboos before ascending to pasture lands. Camp at Dolam Kencho, set in a meadow.
Day 11: Dolam Kencho – Dodena – Thimphu
Details: Trek through forested areas with winding trails and a small pass. Spot langurs (monkeys) along the way. Reach Dodena, exit Jigme Dorji National Park, and transfer to Thimphu. Enjoy an evening stroll around Thimphu and stay overnight at Hotel in Thimphu.

Day 12: Local sightseeing in Thimphu
After breakfast drive to visit National Library and Institute for Zorig Chusum (Commonly known as Arts & Crafts School or Painting School) then drive to Takin Preserve – Takin is national animal of Bhutan. Explore The Folk Heritage Museum (Phelchey Toenkhyim), simply Bhutan museums and to National Textile Museum.. Late afternoon visit Trashichhoedzong, “fortress of the glorious religion”. Overnight stay at the hotel in Thimphu (Altitude 2,320)
Day 13: Drive to Punakha (75km, approx 2 ½ hr drive)
After breakfast, drive to Punakha across Dochu La Pass Located at a height of 3,088m/ 10,130 ft, Afternoon visit Bhutan Longest suspension Bridge & Punakha Dzong (Palace of Great Happiness), built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal at the junction of the Phochu and Mochu rivers. Later in the day go for excursion to Chimi Lhakhang (the temple of fertility).

Day 14: Punakha to Paro (125km, approx 4 ½ hrs drive)
After an early breakfast drive back to Paro across Dochu la pass via Thimphu. On your way visit Tachog lhakang & Suspension Bridge which was built around 1420 by Thangtong Gyalpo who was great architect and saint of Bhutan. Then drive further to paro on arrival check into the hotel & proceed to visit Ta Dzong, then walk down the trail to visit Rinpung Dzong (“fortress of the heap of jewels”).

Day 15: Hike to Tiger Nest (approx 6 hours hike)
After breakfast hike to Taktshang Monastery (Tiger’s nest) approx 6 hours round trip hike. It is one of the most famous of Bhutan’s monasteries, perched on the side of a cliff 900m above the Paro valley floor. After Hike drive back to the hotel to refresh and relax.
Evening an exploratory walk around Main Street and market area…

Day 16: “Final Adieu” – Farewell & Departure
