Punakha, situated in western Bhutan, holds profound historical significance as the site where Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the 17th-century Buddhist saint who unified Bhutan, secured a pivotal victory over Tibetan invaders. The Tibetans sought the sacred relic, Ranjung Kharsapani, but were repelled by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, leading to the introduction of the Punakha Drubchen festival to commemorate this triumph. This unique festival features a dramatic reenactment of the 17th-century battle, with local militia, or ‘pazaps,’ donning traditional battle gear to recreate the historic conflict on the festival’s final day. In 2005, the Punakha Tshechu was established to preserve Buddhist teachings and honor Zhabdrung Rimpoche’s legacy. Both festivals span six days and are dedicated to the goddess Mahakala, showcasing vibrant masked dances and traditional rituals that reflect Bhutan’s rich cultural and religious heritage.
