The “Paro Festival (Paro Tshechu)” is one of Bhutan’s most significant religious celebrations, deeply rooted in the country’s history since the 17th century. Initiated by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, the festival marks both the consecration of Paro Dzong and the rich cultural heritage of Bhutan. Held annually for five days starting on the 10th day of the 2nd Bhutanese lunar month, in 2016 it took place from March 20-24. This vibrant festival offers a unique chance to witness Bhutanese culture through a blend of religious and folk dances performed by both monks and laymen. On the final day, attendees are treated to the unveiling of a gigantic Thangkha known as the Guru Throngdel, a revered Buddhist art piece believed to cleanse viewers of sin. The festival is not only a spiritual experience but also a lively social event where Bhutanese people come together in their finest attire to celebrate their heritage and traditions.
