Bhutia Busty Monastery,, located in the Bhutia Colony of Darjeeling, has a rich history dating back to 1761 when it was established by Lama Dorje Rinzing. Originally situated at Observatory Hill, the monastery faced several challenges, including attacks and plundering in 1815, which led to its reconstruction in 1861. In 1879, it was relocated to its current position in the Bhutia Busty area. The monastery endured significant damage during the 1934 earthquake but was once again renovated, preserving its cultural heritage.
The monastery is a beautiful example of traditional Tibetan architecture and belongs to the Red Sect of Buddhism. Its walls are adorned with intricate murals that narrate the life of Buddha and other Buddhist stories. While photography is prohibited inside the monastery, its serene atmosphere and historical importance make it a popular destination for tourists. The Bhutia Busty Monastery offers a deep connection to both the spiritual and cultural essence of Darjeeling and Sikkim.
